Pressure Differential Valve Rebuild Help

Post by BigRed73 »

I grabbed the rebuild kit for my Brake Pressure Diff. Valve. I soaked the valve in penetrating oil overnight to try and brake the internal rod loose, but no luck. The sets of needle-nose pliers I have are too large to stay open and pull the rod. For those who have rebuilt theirs is there any special tricks your can share in getting the rod out of the valve?

Thanks

If I remember right, I stuck a pointed seal pick into the hole where the switch went and was able to pry the plunger out that way. It was stuck pretty bad.

You are in the middle of a very frustrating experience. I tied mine to the head of a big hammer, leaving space between the valve and the anvil so the piston has room to get out. Then I pounded it very hard against an anvil. You need to use wire or something else that won't slip and make sure it's very snug. Duct tape over the wire might help. The piston came out but the valve slipped and it hit the anvil and dented it enough that the threads were injured so I got a replacement. I used the same method to get the piston out of the replacement. If I had to do it again I would have put the valve in a plastic bag to catch the piston. Another idea would be to drill a hole in the opposite end and use a punch to drive the piston out. Once it's out you could tap the hole and wrap teflon tape around a plug and screw it in the hole you tapped.

Another idea would be unscrew the plug and reattach the valve to the brake lines and push on the brakes as hard as you can. Hopefully the pressure of the brake fluid will force the piston out. Be sure to cover the valve with a bag to catch the piston if it shoots out.

Those are just some ideas. The hammer idea is the only way I've actually tried.

Good luck!

I tried soaking mine as well with no luck. Then I laid a 2x4 on the floor and beat it on 2x4 til it popped out.

After trying for two days to get the piston out on mine, I ended up drilling and tapping a hole in the opposite end then using a long screw to force the piston out. Then I put a short screw with thread sealant on it back in the hole to seal it up.

Something else I did was to heat the valve up with a propane torch. I also ground down a set of needle nose pliers so that they would go in and grab the piston. I wonder if using a small, 8/32 thread t-nut would go into the valve body and be able to be threaded onto the piston itself. Then it would have a good handle to pull on.

Thanks for the tip on heating the valve. I'll definitely give that a try when I get to rebuilding mine.

Hello,

I know this is an old thread but can any one point me in the direction to purchase a new valve. Tired of struggling with the piston and just want to buy new.

Thanks
