Painting/Coating the chassis??? Need input
Hey everyone, I am trying to get a plan together for starting my frame off restoration. Fist order of business is to get everything torn down. I want to paint/coat the frame. What direction is the best for the long term? I've heard that powder coating is good but chips easily. I've heard rubberizing tends to lift after a while. So what is the best way to go about it?? Thanks!

I blasted mine with Black Diamond then 2 coats of POR15 topped off with 2 coats of Eastwood Chassic Black. Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator is also a good sub for POR15.

What's the budget?
For a restoration, dip it in a vat of waste black paint after chemically removing all the corrosion and crud.

I used Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and the Extreme Chassis Black and my 68' frame, suspension, and engine bay. Stuff is pricey for a case of aerosol cans, but the result was great for painting it with the body on the truck (engine was out though). I still removed all the corrosion I could off the frame with a wire brush wheel before painting it. Held up pretty good even in the areas of the frame right next to the headers that I think most paints would burn off. That paint kept the rust away for the remaining 1.5 years I owned it and never tried coming off.

I used Chassis Saver at the beginning and ended up redoing with XO rust A lot of good product's to use out there but, if you don't get the scale knocked down all the way..... worthless
I've had enough and I'm not alone

I used Caterpillar equipment paint. Made to bond to surface rust, Just knock off flaky paint and wire brush. Will handle the abuse of heavy equipment, So a frame is no problem.
I painted the frame about 5 years before I started working on the truck, The frame look the same as it did when I was finished painting it.
I used medium/semi gloss black. I have bleed the brakes and had brake fluid get on the paint on the inner fender. Cleaned it up when I was finished a few minutes later, No damage to the paint.
Only downside I have seen is after the first coat you have to lightly sand the surface because the paint digs into the rust to bond. The surface will be a little rough from the paint digging to bond, so a little sanding will give a smooth surface and will last a very long time with 2 more coats.
Cost about $50 a gallon.

I set the neighborhood kids loose with power tools. Bought a media blaster and blasted the hard to get to spots. Than had to bring in a welder to fix some prior owner damage. After that was all said and done I used POR15, that was about 4 years ago and still holding good. Like it mentioned, the boring prep work is probably the most important step in all of this. I will try to find some photos of mine.
