vin tag starts f25 but title is different

I just bought what title says is F100 truck but vin tag on door says F25 at beginning which fordification says should be f250, is this possible. I know the door could be different but shouldn't the title have been right from the beginning?

Is the vin stamp on frame the only way for me to figure this out, also if vin tag is not correct is there a stamp on the engine to verify I have a 390 as was told to me and what the door vin tag indicates?

Yes, title should be right from beginning, and as you stated the door could be a replacement unit.

Yes, VIN on frame would need to be bounced off VIN on title and/or VIN on door.

No real way to verify engine displacement except by measuring the stroke. There "may" be a tag on the distributor hold down bolt but,.... who knows how accurate that will be after all these years.

The VIN should be stamped on the right side of the frame, Near the front.

Check it and see what the VIN stamped on the frame says.

Sounds like someone replaced the door and didn't swap the tag. Lot of stuff can happen in 50 years.

To check the stroke, put the #1 piston at TDC and remove the spark plugs from cylinder 1 and 4. Insert a wooden dowel into the cylinder and make a mark at a convenient reference point, then do the same thing to the other cylinder, making the mark using the same reference point used on the previous cylinder. Measure between the marks. If it is 3.5 you have a 360, if it is 3.78 you have a 390. Many 360's magically turn into 390's on sale day.

This would be a real problem if you brought the truck into Kentucky. They check the title against the VIN
plate before you can register it. I'm sure other states are the same. You may want to ask the PO about
this. Might be "REALLY" hard to sell.

Check the VIN on frame IF it doesn't match title you have got problems if it matches just get DMV to issue you a replacement VIN on door.
If it doesn't match the PO is your next step but in all honesty it could have been done before even they owned it
