rear disc brake options

Post by farmall1 »

Hey guys. I recently picked up a 1978 front end for my 1970 f100 2wd. I plan to install it and wanted to look at doing disc brakes on the rear at the same time. Someone, I don't remember who, told me that the disc brakes from an 8.8 explorer would bolt up to the 9 inch. Does anyone know if this will work? I am looking to do this on a budget (yea, I know that a dirty word!) I am open to any options that might work. Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen anything about the 8.8 but here's something I was thinking about. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/ford/229 ... 934?page=1

There's no provision for a parking brake though.

Look for a 1980-1983 F100 or 1980-1986 F150/Bronco 9-inch rear end with the 'Torino' large axle bearing flanges. The backing plate bolts will be 3/8" in diameter (as opposed to 1/2" in diameter).

Measure the center to center distance between the upper and lower backing plate bolts. The 'Torino' flange bolts will be 2-inches apart. If the upper and lower backing plate bolts are 2-3/8" apart, it isn't the correct rear end.

With the 'Torino' flange 9-inch rear end, you'll be able to bolt on '95-'01 Explorer rear discs with a couple of spacers and a custom set of 31-spline axles with a 5 x 4.5" lug pattern.

I think the disc brakes off of a crownvic will work on a 9". And they have a built in parking brake too

81 bronco front rotors
Metric GM calipers
Weld on brackets for the calipers.......typical circle track

No parking brake

Can be done for around 200 bucks

These are available as a bolt on while keeping the 5 1/2 bolt circle. I called about them once to find out what discs I would need to buy as replacements and they told me they are Dodge Ram 1500 discs and GM calipers.
