Cruise Control for '71 F 250

Post by fijidad »

I'd like to install an after market cruise control on my F 250 as I drive on the highway quite a bit.

Any thoughts on where to find such a device, or which one? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm considering a Rostra 250-1223 universal kit. It's really basic and requires you to pick a controller at extra cost. For my application, manual trans safety, turn signal lever style controller it runs about $250. If you're still using a cable operated speedo you'll need another adapter though I don't know what that cost. There's also an Audiovox remake for about the same price. Here's a link for the Audiovox http://www.murphskits.com/product_info. ... cts_id=422 And one for the Rostra http://www.rostra.com/universal-afterma ... rostra.php Let us know how you make out. Unfortunately I'm still working on getting the engine built and back in the truck so I can only share what I've found and not actual experience.

Thanks very much. I sent an email asking if they have one for a '71, as their web site only shows back to 1992.

I see my link went bad, sorry about that. They do make a universal kit, Rostra part number 250-1223. You have to buy the interface separately though.

I sent an email to inquire about the availability of a cruise control for a '71, and here's the reply:

"Good morning Dan and thank you for your email. Considering your vehicle is equipped with a mechanical throttle control linkage, it will require our Global Cruise universal cruise control system. Below I've listed a breakdown of the individual components you will need for a cruise control installation on your Ford. The cruise control unit will come with installation instructions, but I've linked to them below if you want to download them and look them over before the install.

Cruise Control Unit : 250-1223
Our Global Cruise cruise control unit is designed to control the speed of vehicles equipped with a mechanically-operated throttle. Part number 250-1223 contains the cruise control servo, throttle cable, mounting bracket, wiring harness and hardware pack for making electrical and throttle connections.

Installation instructions can be found by clicking the link below. It is a PDF document that is 28 pages in length.

Cruise Control Switch : 250-3742, 250-3421 or 250-3592
We manufacture a number of different control switches that can be used with the Global Cruise cruise control unit. I've listed two stalk-style switches that would mount to the left-hand side of the steering column, and one push-button dashboard mountable switch. Please view their images at the link below, but understand you can use any switch on this web page as long as you have somewhere to mount it.

Speed Signal Generator: 250-4165
With the age of your vehicle, it most likely does not have an electronic speed signal coming from the transmission that our cruise control can use to tell it how fast the vehicle is moving while on the road. In a case like that, you have to have a speed signal generator, a sensor with a set of magnets. The sensor is mounted to the body of the vehicle and the magnets are attached to a driveshaft. As the driveshaft spins, the magnets pass by the sensor and create a speed signal so our cruise control knows what speed to hold on the highway.

Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

Nice, I like when a company takes the time to respond and be helpful. Like I said I haven't gotten to that part yet so if you do the install please share the experience and include pictures.

Here's another one I found that sounds interesting, and more affordable.

I did some research on that cruise control from Amazon, turns out it's the same design I once had on a '75 Maverick. It worked great on that car so I think I'm going to go with it. Thanks again for sharing the find.

No problem. http://fordification.com/forum/posting. ... 3&p=702921# I received it in the mail yesterday and it looks really well put together; on my '71, I'll have to install a magnet on the driveshaft and an adjacent control module to read the revolutions, but it's all in the kit...looks pretty bullet proof. I'll try to take some pictures as I go.

That would be great, I won't need the magnets since I have a vss signal from the trans but I'd love to see how the rest of it goes in.

I wanted to add a link to a supplemental manual for this cruise control since you never know what parts someone will be using.

Since I'll be using a NV4500 in my truck it's nice to have a ready reference for the speedo signal.
