disc brake porportioning valve location

Post by tybob81 »

I am wanting to use a set of new hard lines from broncograveyard I have. The braket for the porportioning valve I have is off a 76 f100 and the brake lines are for a 78-79. I need pics of the location of a 78-79 f150, f100 mounting location and bracket. Possibly the hardlines for the front also.

The '73-'77-1/2 2WD trucks with disc brakes had the proportioning valve on top of the steering box, right under the master cylinder. '77-1/2 thru '79 2WD trucks and all '73-'79 4WD trucks had the prop valve mounted on the back side of the main front crossmember, along the left side, right below the driver. Not only will the lines be different, but the prop valve itself differs. The lines you have will not work without a LOT of cutting, bending, etc.

Yep. If you've got a '76 prop valve bracket, it's the kind that mounts the valve to the top of the steering box, and if you've only got one, then you're only halfway there anyway, since there are actually two brackets. One bracket bolts to the prop valve, another bracket bolts to the steering box, and the two brackets bolt together.

Image

If you're set on using the brake lines you have, you'll need to get the prop valve and mounting bracket that matches those lines.

Now...having said that....you can use a '77-1/2-'79 bracket to mount your '76 prop valve on the back of the front crossmember, but the lines will require some minor tweaking (since the later prop valve is a little smaller). Here's a picture from a member here where he did just that:

I was going to post a picture of the later prop valve, but I can't seem to find a good shot of one. But anyway, to do the job without having to do any modifications to the brake lines you want to use, I'd recommend just finding the matching prop valve and bracket.

FYI- I've also found a handful of disc brak prop. vavles in the same location as the drum prop. valve. I think they are found on a few '73s and '74s. The only thing it requires is cutting the brake line coming from the back of the truck. The other lines are close enough to be slightly tweaked and they fit fine! I like this location just because it is tucked in the frame and more hidden than the other two ways I've seen.

Thank you very much for all the pics and all your help. A couple years back I bent up all my lines to match up to the 76 style bracket and valve, but they didn't look stock to me so I wanted to use factory bent lines. Here in the rust belt there are not many donor trucks that have good lines. Most have been replaced over the years so thats why I bought the new lines from broncograveyard. So the 78- up valve is smaller then? Is a F250 and F350 porportioning valve the same as a F100? What years did the 78- up valve go all the way in to? If a F250 is the same I have access to a 79 out in a buddies junk yard if I want to dig it out of a group of old early 50's dodge trucks.

Also what side did the lines come out of the master cylinder on a 78-79 F100? I have a NOS master cylinder on my truck for a 76 f100 and the outlets point to the inner fender, but I have seen them point to the inside towrds the motor.

What year is this from? It is a one piece bracket. It was a while ago so I don't remember if it came off a manual or p/s gear box.

Looks like a one piece version of a 76 style bracket?
