Front Axle Identification Help.

Post by Ks Highboy »

Found a 77 F250 front axle with the big lockouts. Were the big lockout front axles a heavier axle than the smaller lockout axle? Are the big lockout axles D44 or D60?

Look for casting marks to determine if it is a D-44 or a D-60. The hubs don't denote what axle it is. As far as a D-44 the bigger hubs are typically a heavier rated axle, (3300# vs 3000# if I remember correct).

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but most likley its a Dana 44 6CF HD clossed knuckle #3500. They had the larger external lock outs with 12 bolt knuckle seals. The hubs do not interchange between the lighter #3000 Dana 44 6CE. I have the D44 6CF HD axle in my 68 250 with a Dana 70 rear.

This was a disc brake front end from a 77. It was the open nuckle front end.

I have a 1976.5 Dana 44 open knuckle disc brake set up just like yours which I have installed into my 1970 F250. It came out of a Crew cab 4x4, which is why it is considered a HD.
