f100 disc swap, wheel problem

so I have a disc set up from a 78 on my 71 and I have factory 80's ford wagon wheels. was doing a little mock up today and the hold down bolt that holds the caliper rubs the wheel , the caliper clears fine. i'm probably going to shave down the bolt a little and see if I can get the clearance I need, as these are my favorite factory wheel. anyone else run into this issue?

Looks like a backspacing/offset issue. If those wheels had another 1/2" of backspacing they would work. While I don't necessarily recommend it, a 1/4"-1/2" wheel spacer would do the trick. Also, a 1/4"-1/2" shorter bolt would accomplish the same thing. Speaking of the bolt. it doesn't look like it's screwed in all the way or is it supposed to sit like that?

They tighten up like that Randy.
There's an oval shaped shoulder on that bolt that seats before the bolt bottoms out. :wink:

I never knew Ford produced the wagon wheel for it's trucks from the factory? :hmm:

I think i'm going to grind a little off the bolt head, I only need a little more than about a 1/16"

You might also try a Allen head bolt.

can't, the head is tapered, special bolt

I’ll have to look at mine with stock wheels, don’t think it is that close.

Agree shaving the head should work as would a thin spacer....

Well ain't that something. I've been piddling on a disc brake conversion on my 68' using front components off of a 77'. Bought a set of those wagon wheels a couple years ago and never thought there would be a clearance issue. Guess I'll have to get on wth it and see what I got. :?

Yes but the most major difference I know of is from F-100/F-150 to F-250 & F-350. I remember some of the 3/4 tons using a dual piston caliper, (versus a single piston caliper). But most if not all the guys here will be using a dent era 73-79 single piston caliper donor truck.
But very good point as the dual caliper is probably much larger making the wheel options less. :hmm:

so I was digging through some boxes in the garage and I found the solution in one of them. a few years ago I had a 78 f150 and got a few boxes with misc parts in them. anyway, there were these caliper bolts. they fit perfect and give the clearance I needed. bad thing is I don't know the brand, the bag was faded, but I think they were dorman.

IMO thats a low stress part, all it does is keep the wedge from the spring from coming out.

I wouldn’t worry too much about them, if it makes you feel any better set a reminder to have a look at them occasionally...

not worried about them at all, they are caliper bolts just made with a low profile.
