Where's the Ford Truck love?

Post by Perkint »

In this month’s “American Car Collector”, a magazine devoted to valuing classics and discovering the next hot vehicle, they asked “Where’s the market love for 1967-1972 Ford Trucks?. They observed while all trucks from 1967-1972 are having a market upswing, Ford trucks lag behind GMs of the same era, with an average value of $12,000 vs $23000. Readers’ explanations varied from a greater supply of Fords vs. Chevys, looks, the 2wd Ford’s I-beam front suspension and less availability of after market parts. I’ve attached those reader observations here. I hope they are legible.

I’m wondering how members here would explain the difference in market value, and whether they believe that difference will remain in years to come? And whether market value is the most important consideration for those of us who love ‘67-‘72 Ford trucks?

The less popular the Ford's are, the more I can afford parts. Plus I like them better anyways.

Market value had zero to do with it for me........I've always likes the 67-72 Fords over the Chevys because I actually think they are a better looking truck, I love the twin i beam suspension (my F100 rides better than my dads 71 Cheyenne Super) and I really love to be the oddball F100 in the sea of Chevys at a car show (I get a lot of attention).......dare to be different - and if they aren't as popular that means parts and availability of whole trucks won't break the bank if I want another one..... :D

My father had a 68 Ford F100. I'm now 57 and finally bought the truck of my dreams, a 1972 F250. I spent $2000 for it last year and have $15,000 invested in it to make it mechanically sound. I also furbished the cab. I had no ideal I would spend that kind of money but the truck was old and tired. I plan on rewiring the truck next year and replacing the instrument cluster with one from Dakota. At first I was hesitant about upgrading everything and wanted to keep it in original condition, but with original parts costing an arm and leg I thought it best to bring the truck into the 21st century. Hopefully the truck will be around another 40 years. With all the upgrades, it still looks the same, but with digital instrumentation and new retro style radio.

I started to really like the Bumpsides when I was just a kid. My next door neighbor had one and I liked the looks and thought it was pretty cool. It had a nice rumble, so that made it a hot rod too. I also had a little Matchbox truck that just happened to be a Bumpside at the same time. It was one of my favorites.

Years later, when I decided I wanted a truck, my first choice was a Bumpside, not just because I liked the style though. One of my friends had a '67 GMC with a 283/3-spd combo. He also had a '72 Dodge with a 318/4-speed. They were both 2WD trucks. I liked the styling of the GMC, but I didn't like the location of the steering gear and it had some kind of trailing arm rear suspension that just seemed more complicated to me, plus the cab seemed smaller than the Ford. I kinda liked the Dodge styling, but the truck just felt kind of flimsy somehow, built lighter maybe. I liked the idea of the Ford "Twin I-Beam" suspension, strong and less likely to need alignment. Anyway, since I wasn't even considering any imports, my first choice was a "Bump" era Ford and my second choice would have been '67-'72 Chevy/GMCs. I hadn't really ruled out certain years of Dodge or International pick-ups either, but I really preferred the Ford. Looking back, I think I made the right choice. :)

When I had the desire for an old truck around 8 years ago, Chevys were priced out for me. Bought my F100 for $1400, because it's what I could afford, and I like the body style. In that respect, it was all market value for me, just in the opposite direction.

Now... things have changed. Now, the F100 is my fave and I would say the F100 is really a hotter truck now, no matter what market values say. Love or hate Gas Monkey, they had something to do with that.

Regardless, I wouldn't trade my F100 for a Chevy or anything else for that matter.

About 2 months ago I placed an order from DJM suspension. I got to chatting with the DJM rep about these trucks, and he told me that the drop beams and drop shackles for the 67-72 F100's were the hottest selling items his company has right now. He mentioned that these items for our trucks are outselling all other trucks products combined. He said this was a recent phenomenon, so this article might just be outdated. Either that, or the people who have these trucks just aren't selling them.

Along those lines... I was having my truck towed a couple months ago (which happens a few times a year). The two truck driver was telling me he'd towed five F100s in the last month (we live in a small town), and that hed really like to have one, but the people who have them aren't letting them go.

I think the whole interaction is pretty spot on!

here is the way I was brought up and been around Ford Trucks way before these trucks where made yet, I was told if you want to just ride around,, Then go buy yourself a Chevy since that's all they are good for  ,, If you want a truck that is going to work and work it hard and abuse it that head on down to the Ford Dealership and buy a Ford Truck especially since we had a fleet of Ford and Mack Trucks and on Mack's they where tough as long as it was Mack from front bumper to the back end without any of this cross breeding they do now on Mack's I have had a few chevies and dodges and never had one that can take my abuse but the Ford was always there for us on anything it was called for

Just picked up a 1967 F250, my friend recently bought an 1967 Chev C20. What's funny is my Dad had an 1972 F250 and his Dad had an 1967 Chev C20.
I guess the old adage that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree is correct. Anyway we're both excited to take this journey of saving these two beauties from the scrap yard together.

P.S. Ford's are better but don't let the secret out.

I was 17 when I saw my first '67 Bumpside. I thought they were a perfect truck, still do. But the way things are going by the way of technology etc I now wonder when the first "electric bump" will appear. It might be a longshot but I am predicting that in the coming years when all the overhauls are done, the transmissions become obsolete and the rest of the trucks can be maintained body wise that somewhere, somehow, someone will come up with an electric conversion kit that will fit everything from old Mustangs to pickups and maybe even conventional F600's! Growing up in those "golden years" of real muscle car development I, like many others on this site, have seen a lot of changes. Horsepower is smarter and doesn't freeze up on cold humid days. When these changes come along it will place a whole new view on the value of these trucks and they will become more valuable. If I live long enough I might even electric charge my '49 Merc 3 ton! :D

Alli can tell is this, every time I take my 67 out I get stopped or yelled at or talked to. Stopped at red lights or driving down the road it is never lonely. I can’t imagine another truck getting that much attention, at least here in KC.
