1971 or 1972 F-250
My son purchased what may or may not be a 1971 F-250 pickup yesterday. We were curious what all the VIN codes meant and found this website. Looking at this page: http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN71.htm, the Consecutive Unit Number (M64763) and Color Code (B) do not show up on the page. If we look at this page: http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN72.htm, we find the Consecutive Unit Number (shows as Sept 1971) and Color Code (shows as Wind Blue). Is it possible that this is still a 1971 model year truck? We do not believe the truck ever had the door replaced but you never know. We have looked anywhere else for the VIN yet to verify what is on the door matches. Can we see the VIN in other locations without any major disassembly?
We want to look for parts in the future but we are not sure whether to look for '71 or'72 parts. Maybe the year is close enough and it does not matter...never owned anything this old before.

I believe there are two more locations for the vin. Both are on the RH frame rail, one is under the cab so you can't see it. The other I believe is under the alternator area on the rail in the engine compartment. Might have to wipe some rust and dirt off to find it.
Did it not have a title?

What is on the door matches the title but that info does not seem to match what we are finding online. We will to look around the alternator to see what we can find.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by grille inserts. Attached is a picture of the grille itself.

Re: 1971 or 1972 F-250
Most parts are interchangeable 1967-72. Your grill is one of the parts that are specific to the year. Your picture is a 72 grill. 1971 had 6 open cells per side where 1972 had 4. They do interchange though. Other things that are year specific are trim items. 1971-72 are very similar. Have a look on this site in technical articles for pictures and descriptions of particularities. Good luck!

Actually the yearly changeover was done in late july-august of each year and was done fairly quickly, over a few weeks, so as not to lose production.Manny wrote:... september october would have bee retooling time. changing over took some time. what grille inserts are in it??

Re: 1971 or 1972 F-250
Starting to settle back think he is true 72' model truck with the inserts and all. Ford motor company. I love them but hate them with some of the things they did. Sorry to use the term some time was a little vague. Your spot on with 2-3 weeks. Just myself thinking it was later.mk wrote:Actually the yearly changeover was done in late july-august of each year and was done fairly quickly, over a few weeks, so as not to lose production.Manny wrote:... september october would have bee retooling time. changing over took some time. what grille inserts are in it??
