1970 Ranger XLT

Hello all, I'm new to this site and I'm deployed in Kabul Afghanistan until this September. I just bought this 1970 Ranger F100 XLT from a good friend of mine. It has a 360 2 BBL, C6 auto and a 9" rear axle. What do you all think? http://www.diversionmotors.com/1399_70_F100.html

By the way guys, as you all know I am deployed in Afghanistan where they dropped that MOAB, I'm located 122 miles from where they dropped it at, didn't hear the boom or felt it though. The MOAB killed almost a hundred terrorist including four of their commanders.

Not a whole lot but I do want to convert it from carburation to TBI fuel injection for better drivability. If you look closely at the truck you can see that it can use a paint job. But others say leave it alone so to retain it's original patina. That would be pretty cool. There are a lot of guys on here with fuel injection I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction.

That is a VERY clean old truck. If it were mine I would pull the grill guard off and enjoy the crap out of it. MAYBE a bolt on EFI, but a well tuned carb is adequate for a cruiser. I have (LITERALLY) not touched the carb on my Mustang in nearly 10 years. it only gets driven a few hundred miles every 6 months, but a properly tuned carb is a great simple fuel management device. If its going to be a daily driver, or MPG is a big concern EFI can be a big help though. Once you return stateside and have some time behind the wheel, see how it rides. I wouldn't rush into a $1000 EFI Kit before I know it may have a real problem (maybe trans slips?) that the money would be better placed first?. But great looking ride.

I would look at upgrading the front brakes to a 73-79 set of discs before I jumped into the EFI boat.

Welcome Mr. Det - first of all, thank you for your service!

I agree with Maximus - enjoy the truck when you get home, start by getting the bugs and gremlins out of it, and the truck will tell you what direction it wants to go with improvements. I love the Ranger XLT's, and it's great having more XLT owners engaged with this site. My tailgate panel looks a lot like yours, and I plan to restore mine this year and post the journey along the way.

Sounds good! I'm looking forward to picking up this truck when I return from Afghanistan. I am pretty much sold on installing the 2V TBI electronic fuel injection for daily drivability reasons. Other than that I will upgrade as needed along the way. Back in the nineties I use to own a 1968 F250 and I loved that truck and have always regretted selling it. Now that I own this 1970 XLT I plan on holding on this one for a good long time.
