I have a friend with a 2008 buick that has a coolant leak, He took it to a mechanic that said it needs a new timing chain cover gasket which will cost him $500 to replace. But it will be more if he gets in there and finds anything else wrong. I'm no mechanic but I think I already see something wrong there.
Any thoughts on this?

Re: Friends Buick
Not familiar with that particular vehicle, but:
1) could be a fishing expedition for more money;
2) could be spot on. Our 3.8L Taurus engine was as water-tight as a screen door. I replaced a bad water pump, and the timing cover gasket then started to leak immediately after getting the water pump back on. Fixed that, the head gaskets started to leak. So, what I'm sayin' is, that engine might be a POS that has a reputation for Lots Of Things Going Wrong.
