Fuel tank

Post by Busboy »

Does anyone know of a source for a new underneath fuel tank for a 69 f-250? I ordered one from LMC and it is not correct.

Seems as if the mustang tank will work. There are a few threads on here about it. Here is a link to one.

Really? Is this not the correct tank? I was kind of counting on it for my rebuild.

The problems are: the fill and vent nipples are reversed compared to my factory 69 tank, the sending unit lock ring doesn't clamp the sending unit in tight enough to prevent fuel leaks, the sending unit fuel outlet nipple is 3/8 inch. My factory one is 5/16 inch. Also the filler hose which I bought at the same time for this tank is about 4 inches too short. The tank appears physically different also, who knows if it will actually fit into the brackets correctly. LMC said " we haven't had any complaints" suggesting that I'm crazy or something. They did take it back and will refund all of my money.

I know, believe me I wish it would have worked, now I'm going to attempt to repair the pinholes in my existing tank. :cuss:

As an alternative, I've been researching a rectangular fuel cell to mount between the frame rails, behind the cab mount x/m n the next x/m. Summit has a 26"x25"x9" 16 gallon tank that I think will fit.

I've been thinking about a similar alternative myself. Brackets would be somewhat of a hassle.

This is one of the many that I was looking into. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum- ... /overview/ I have a welder friend who makes gas tanks on the side so modification is readily available. If he gets the material and fabs it, it's not cost effective but with the basic shell for $130, I can accomplish it relatively inexpensively. I'm trying to mount it between these two crossmembers and stay flush or below the top of the frame rail. It should only stick down about 2" below the bottom of the frame rail so I believe I'll have sufficient clearance above the drive shaft. With a rock guard under it, for a mounting pan and heat shield, I should be able to run dual exhausts under it without having to bend them around the stock side mount tank, for a straight exhaust. Still in the thinking phase so a lot of variables to contend with, like the E-brake equalizer. For mounting, I was thinking of a pan that goes from the bottom of one frame rail across to the other. Might make it out of bar and bolt a flat shield to it. Then a couple of brackets on the shield to support the bottom of the tank. From there, some narrower x/m's across under the top flange of the frame, utilizing the overhang of the tank top to help support the tank. Just kicking around some ideas. I work in a fab shop and have access to lasers, press brakes, welding, powder coating, etc so the possibilities are limited only to my imagination. :D

I'm inclined to think that a side tank from a 73 or even later model truck would come much closer to fitting correctly than starting completely over. Somebody, somewhere undoubtedly has come across a tank that would swap without much hassle.

I'm 99% sure that the factory auxiliary tanks used in dentside trucks has the same physical dimensions and shape as the bumpside auxiliary tanks. Not sure on the hose hookups though.

I found what I think is the last OEM tank on the planet for my 69. Cost me over 300.00 but it will be correct. :D
