Year Model ID

Post by Les Ford 67 »

I recently bought a 67-72 F100. It was titled as a '72, but I'm not so sure. The grill, hood lettering, tail lights and reflectors match a '69. I guess someone could have replaced the hood, bed, and grill at some points with parts from a '69, but I don't think so. The original paint color matches everywhere. The first three letters of the VIN are F17, which don't show up on any of this site's charts for any year. The only sight I found that would search older VIN's found it as a '72, but that may be because it is titled as such in Kansas. Any ideas on how I can make sure I know the year?

Is the VIN you are reading off of the door or off the frame rail? Someone could have replaced the door with a door from another truck at some point in its life. If you look on the passenger side frame rail there should be a VIN stamped on top. Check that one too to rid out of any possibly that someone could of swapped panels from another ride, and I think the gas tanks mounting is different too, which might be another help.

A little bit of scothbrite will help expose the frame serial number stamped on top of the framerail between the engine crossmember and the rad support. You can also look at the seatback for the date code on the paper or metal tag attached if it's the original seat. The last 6 digits of the vin, not the first three, are used for finding the rough date of manufacture.
