1966 F250 towing capacity?

Post by crouchkl »

Looking to get a 1966 F250 to haul my 23 foot travel trailer camper. But, I don't know if this truck with an original 352 will be able to handle it in the Colorado mountains. Does anyone know the towing capacity?

a 23 foot travel trailer should not be a big problem, its not a huge trailer. BUT. With anything that is 50 years old just expect to be taking your time. Dont expect to keep up with today's modern traffic. give yourself plenty of braking distance and think 3 steps ahead.

It's not what it'll haul ... It's what it stops.

How much does your trailer weigh.?, older trailers are heavier than newer trailers.

Thanks 1972hiboy. We are currently using a 2009 Explorer that has a 4.6L with the towing package. We moved from Iowa (flat) to Colorado (not flat) and have noticed that the Explorer might not cut it pulling in the mountains. Figured that if I could get an older truck that was in good shape, I'd have something that I could improve on. Something that looks nice.

cep62: Dry weight of the trailer is 4257 lbs and the hitch weight is 534 lbs.

Really depends on the brakes and how loose the steering is. My F350 will pull and stop my dad's 10k combined boat, trailer OK but the steering slop makes things interesting above 50 mph.

Personally without excellent disc brakes and good steering I'd stay away from one.
