crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
HI,i'm new from n. fl . i'm stuck and need someone 's good advice. I have got to change the front seal in my 360 eng.How do I remove the crankshaft " sleeve" that is behind the damper???? I've never dealt with a 2 piece damper like this, the book says use a" suitable" tool to pull the sleeve away from the front cover.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
Hello Bruce and welcome! In the past ive been able to get those off by pulling on it and gently tapping on it with a brass hammer all around and it shakes it loose. what have you tried so far?

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
Hopefully you didn't make a one piece damper into a 2 piece damper by using a gear puller on the outer ring.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
can you try applying some heat on it? not a rosebud or anything but like a map gas torch or something to get it to grow ever so little? then try tapping on it again? I wonder if you could use a puller on it with locking jaws or something

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
There are only two kinds of sleeves, the ones that stick and the ones that are going to stick. How much of your engine do you have apart? As a last resort I have removed the timing chain cover, if it will clear the sleeve, and loosen off the cam shaft gear. Remove the cam gear and drop the chain off the crank gear. Next get your 3 jaw puller behind the crank gear, put a bolt in the crank pulley hole so the puller has something to push against and start "pouring the berries to it!" It's a nasty job but they will come off. Try as much heat and tapping with a brass hammer as you can, good luck, let us know how you made out.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
BURNT UP THE BETTER PART OF A CAN OF MAPP GAS, TAPPED TIL I FORGOT HOW,AND STILL NOT A BUDGE. THE " I C E" CAN REALLY GET TO ME SOMETIMES. JUST TO CHANGE A FRT. SEAL, PULLING THE CRANK GEAR IS JUST" NOT RIGHT",BESIDES BEING ALOT OF B.S. THAT DOESN'T APPLY HERE BECAUSE THE TIMING COVER WILL NOT CLEAR THE SLEEVE EVEN IF I COULD PUNCH OUT THE SEAL FROM THE OUTSIDE,THE TIMING COVER STILL WON'T CLEAR IT . I'M STILL TRYING.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
What is the size of the part you are calling the sleeve? A better description of the part would be helpful as would more info on how you removed the vibration dampner. I suspect that you have seperated the two pieces of the dampner. The repair part known as a sleeve for the crankshaft has no possibility of preventing removal of the timing chain and gear cover.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
Just as I theorized earlier. A picture of what the hell your working on would answer your problem.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
I've never seen a sleeve on a crank, I have seen them on the balancer.
The only thing behind the balancer is the oil slinger, and that dose not have to be removed to replace a front seal.

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
He's talking about the spacer behind the balancer. Never had one stick on me I took a few on these apart
take a flat blade put on the end of the key and tap untill it lifts and use pliers to pull the key out and then see if that will help removing it

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
Bolt a muffler clamp onto the FE FORD crank spacer and use a puller to remove
Not my idea but it works
Leave the heat off the crank
FE and 385 series engines both have the crank spacer

Re: crankshaft "sleeve" removal???
well I used a bearing/gear splitter to get behind the lip on the sleeve along w/ a 3 jaw puller it (the sleeve) came off fairly easy. There was a sleeve used that is straight (see tool T56P-6362-A on pg. 180 of Chilton truck & van manual years 1970-76) and a sleeve with a raised area and they say use a jaw puller on those,it doesn't work. The muffler clamp is a great idea with a puller. O'couse the slinger was gone but chain & gears look real good. I want to Thank everyone for their input....
