For crying out loud...

Post by Ranchero50 »

'89 F450 wrecker. Buddy used the wheel lift as an outrigger so the boom could lift the rear of a IH 806 and the top cylinder mount bent. Today's task is to gusset it. So used a 4x6 and the boom to lift it off the ground to remove the wheels. Passenger side wouldn't hold so had to put it back on the ground. Got everything loose and back up in the air.

Noticed rotor was rusty, caliper was obviously stuck and been that way for a while. Looked a little harder and noticed the pad had dropped down...

And cut the rotor off the hub.

So, I expect a 3 hour job is gonna be three days of sourcing / swapping parts. Dana 80 10 lug rear.

Holy cow, I hope this truck still isnt used for commercial service? if so then its time for a coffee break chat with the fella who works on them. Now is a great time to do a full brake job and hub service wheel bearing cleaning and new seals. but really, you probably saving a life.

Nah, not commercial. More of a farm mule that we did a Cummins swap on about ten years ago. Still a really tough good truck overall. It has a Dana 60 up front and needs the trans swap / driveshaft to be 4x4. Decision is to pull the axles and hubs off this one and swap out another pair from a parts rear. This thing has 5.13 gears and will move the world, albeit slowly.

Pulled it apart and found this...

Axle was tight on the passenger side coming out. Weld is cracked on the top. If it had broken the wheel would have only been held on by the caliper's grip on the rotor. But wait, the rotor was broken free of the hub. I don't think the problems are related but someone should buy a lottery ticket.

I guess Buddy is not such a bad guy after all. If it wasn't for him you would not have found the potential catastrophic problems. Its funny how thing work.

The funny thing is the welded on stub shaft was out of alignment almost 3/16" over it's 4" length. As a follow up, yesterday we went and drug a '89 F350 ex tree company truck to the farm with a chain and pulled the rear out of it. Surprisingly everything unbolted without much fuss. Of course once the tires were off we realised both hub seals were leaking but I digress. Slid it under the tow truck and used little come alongs and some straps to lift it in place. So now it's back to rolling and I still have to drop the lift out and fix it. Maybe today if help is available.

Both of the other rears had loose metal wandering around.
