Barrett Jackson Scottsdale auction - 1970 F-100 Sport Custom sold for $20k
I work from home, so I usually have the TV on in the background. They just showed a red/white 1970 F-100 sport custom with a 360 / 3-speed automatic, which sold for $20k. The TV commentators mentioned that the wheels were out of a 62 truck, which they didn't like but they appreciated they were from another Ford truck. The bench was from a newer truck, which looked nice, but definitely not OEM in any way.
It was a nice truck, but nothing that special. Looks like our bumps are starting to appreciate well in value! That's awesome. I bought in at the right time.

The problem is I'm a buyer of these old trucks and people are paying to much for them and driving the price up keeping the younger generation out of reach of owning one. It would be great if I was a seller but i'm not. I hate these shows that supposedly sell a truck for 20 Grand that isn't worth 5 Grand. Remember people its TV.

I hear you about trying to buy. It's an actual auction, not a TV show. Barrett Jackson is one of the bigger auction houses in the US. That's what the truck sold for.

Same price as an Asian turd car. Don't look like a bad deal to me. I know people are now snapping up the older Ford trucks, don't blame them.

They're the problem. Buy a swb thats worth 2k for 6-8k put some airbags and wheels on it and sell it for 35k!
Highly unlikely!

That was a pretty well restored truck though. If you think about all the fork and parts that go into a full, well done restoration like that, even if you do most of the work yourself, $20,000 isn't that crazy. Not everyone has the mustard to do that kind of work, and would rather pay the $$$. On the other hand, you have guys like us who buy the beat up old trucks for a fraction of that and are willing to put in the blood, sweat, tears, to make that work of art. Or at least try. Just my .

Purdy truck. Somewhere I feel there is a poor smuck who sold it for $500 and some company did the work purely to sell it at the auction.

Oh yeah. I have a feeling when my bump is finished the guy I bought it from will feel like that. But I paid $4k and it was an all original explorer edition. His grandfather owned it until he passed away a few years back. I plan to fully restore mine down to the original seats. I found the fabric for the explorer seats on sms fabrics the other day.Ranchero50 wrote:Purdy truck. The blue parts on mine came from a F250 that the local scrap dealer sold my buddy so those guys always like it when the truck brings them stuff. I've seen the guy I got the frame from twice and he couldn't believe it was the same truck. My truck isn't purdy but sure is functional and gets a lot of thumbs up on the road. Had the guys at the local hydraulic shop wetting themselves when I stopped in to get a hose repaired last week. I'd like to think it's an everyman's truck vs. a show / trailer queen. The auction truck reminds me of a retired guys toy and honestly the price compares favorably to a newer F-series.

From the pictures I've seen, I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit, Ranchero. Lou is a great looking truck in my opinion, and I know it took a lot of work on your part.

It definitely is nice from pics. Trailer queens are boring. I never understand people that buy classics and never drive them. What's the point? I know people invest, but cmon. At least drive to the store or to work on occasion. Then again I have never understood the people that sit there washing their vehicle every other day and freak out about a little dirt or dust on their vehicle. Enjoy your vehicle. It doesn't have to be perfect. Perfection is boring. I did a frame off restoration on my 70 f250 4x4 highboy and I'm here to say at 20,000 they didn't make much . Trailer queen or daily driver to each his own. I drive mine but I'm careful. I love the truck it's like the one my grandfather had. Try buying a f250 4x4 for 20 grand. I had an f350 2002 with a 5.4 70,000 miles it was a dog no power and no matter how well I maintained it and cleaned it ,it was done and I bought it new. I would pay $ 20,000.any day for a brand new 1970 4x4 pickup.

Couldn't disagree more. I'm 29, and have owned 9 bumpsides in 11 years. I'm convinced the 22k truck is a better rig than what most kids are buying at the local car-lot, for similar prices..
The younger generation can buy a project all day, every day if they look for it.
As far as value, a tight, rust-free, running 1970 F100 is fetching close to 5k right now on a national level. Forget full resto's .. That SWB '70 F100 looked dang nice. 22K was a fair price, for the buyer, and the seller.
