Q: When is a Camper Special not a Camper Special?

Post by colnago »

A: When the Marti Report says so.

I was positive that my '67 was a Camper Special, but I wanted to make sure before ripping into the rear hubs. I was quite surprised when I got my Marti report that it was a special-order truck, with heavy-duty springs, but not a Camper Special.

Moral of the story: if you really want to know about your truck, get the report. I think it cost twelve bucks; I put more in the gas tank.

Definitely worth it, especially if you're wanting to confirm an original Mercury....

One of my '69's is fully equipped with all the Camper Special stuff except the call-out on the fenders. Oddly, the trans code is blank and it has a 3spd-OD tranny, column shifted. It also has the dealer-installed 3 tanks, which I think is the reason for ordering all the Camper Special stuff without actually ordering the Camper Special.... he wanted even more range than just the Camper Special extra tank would provide. Also, he got the 3.54 posi Dana 60, even though it was originally a 360 which usually required a 3.73 axle ratio.

Also, perhaps the Overdrive tranny was a hangup for ordering a Camper Special: supposedly you couldn't even get one on a 250, and possibly not even special ordered if you got the 250 CS.

The original owner's widow only recalled that he spent days at the dealership looking, discussing, ordering, and getting the dealer add-ons. I wish I'd been able to talk to the guy himself to find out the rest of the story.
