Run away if its a numbers matching ford.
It drives me insane when people advertise as numbers matching Ford. It just tells me they know nothing about what they are trying to sell.

Well that does actually matter for some vehicles, Mustangs and R-code galaxies, but I cant really see it for an ol' Ford pickup!
These phrases along with 'Survivor' or 'Barn find' or 'Rare' generally go hand in hand with an over inflated asking price...
I couldn't care less that your 1969 f250 still has the original 360, valuable to me is RUST-FREE........now that is rare!

So many people think these trucks are worth a fortune because of that show. I can't ever watch it.FLASH 1 wrote:You forgot one that I just saw few weeks back,,, ad on E-Bay says Gas Monkey Special

Re: Run away if its a numbers matching ford.
The '69 F100, Custom Cab, LWB, 2 wheel drive, 360 3 on the tree donor truck I purchased to complete my next project pickup is a period correct, all original pickup. I know the truck and aside from periodic maintenance on it, there has never been a bolt turned on it. But if that truck were to hit the auction floor at one of those "high end" Arizona auctions, those floor guys dressed like undertakers that have no voices left from screaming that they have "the highest bid" would have the ol' Ford have a "numbers matching" label on it. What do they know and why should they care? A high bid means more commission for them, just load up the bidders with free booze, butter up the folks wearing black leather jackets and pastel pants and tell them what they want to hear. But numbers matching, not a chance but it is "rust free!" Great post!

Am I right when I say, you can match the cab to the frame with the vin numbers. However, there is really no way to match the engine number to anything.

The drivers door has the VIN tag. So it would be the door to the frame. So many people have swaped out doors without swaping the VIN tag. Ford did not match any other parts to the exact truck except for a few special built cars Shelby etc. I don't believe any bumps where in this category. There is date coding on parts. If the date is newer than your truck you know its the wrong part.Bumpityjohn01 wrote:Am I right when I say, you can match the cab to the frame with the vin numbers. Read through this thread from August 2015 about "Numbers Matching" from a fellow seasoned Ford enthusiast who states it is correct and applicable to Fords.69Ford wrote:It drives me insane when people advertise as numbers matching Ford. The member's interpretation of "numbers matching" are dated coded parts within a specified time preceding the assembly date of the Ford vehicle.
In my opinion, that holds true for "period correct" but not for "numbers matching" as the term implies.

Frame, Door and Cab can match, that is it. The other numbers don't guarantee anything.

Numbers matching to me means the part can be traceable to an exact car and could no way possible be from another car. Date coded or period coded means the part could have come off another car that was built around the same time. Am I wrong.

Yuuuup. That's how I understand "numbers matching".69Ford wrote:Numbers matching to me means the part can be traceable to an exact car and could no way possible be from another car. "Period correct" means that based on the production date of the vehicle, the part could have been installed on the production line. For example, date-coded parts in March and April would be correct for a vehicle with a May 1 build date.
