Crown vic, 5.0 oil pan clearance
Hello guys, Im a newbie here. Still trying to figure out posting pics? Love the site its taught me a lot about bumpsides. I've always been partial to 78-79 dentsides, but these bumpsides have really grown on me last few years.
I just bought a wrecked 68 SWB. Already have 67 SWB frame and front clip. I'll be buying a 94 Mustang 5.0 w/ 5spd. Tomorrow and my question is, if I do the CV swap, will the 94 oil pan work? I believe i need a rear sump pan, but not sure if the little sump on the front of 94 will be a big deal?
Anyone run into this before?

I'd recommend checking out the projects sub forum. Because it's a non OEM swap and the motor mounts need fabbed it's hard to say what will and will not work. A good fab guy can work miracles with a hammer and welder.

Gothcha, thanks. I did find out a CV 5.0 with what look like a similar pan to the mustang did clear the cross member. I will say the fabbed motor mounts where pretty long, not sure if 4 inches, but pretty close.

Re: Crown vic, 5.0 oil pan clearance
The front suspension assembly for this conversion would come from a 2003-2011 model CV. 2002-earlier model CV front suspensions are not the same.
The 5.0L engines were out of production and not installed in the '03-up models. The '03-up CV would have come with a 4.6L engine. Comparing an older CV front suspension with a 5.0L engine in it would not be the same as comparing the later suspension with the 4.6L .

Re: Crown vic, 5.0 oil pan clearance
Thanks Ultra, I may have been rambling a bit. The motor\trans is out of a 94 mustang GT. I have not aquried the CV front end yet. Its on my to do list. Since I had to buy a frame for the wrecked 68 truck, I thought I may as well do the CV swap. Just wasnt sure about the dual sump Mustang oil pan? Since the motor mounts have to be fabbed to the CV front end, I believe the Mustang pan will clear.

Re: Crown vic, 5.0 oil pan clearance
I have a front suspension assembly from a 2003 civilian Crown Vic (not installed in my '69 F100) and I have a 5.0L H.O. engine from a '90 Mustang GT (sitting on the engine stand).
I have the double sump pan off the 5.0L engine and the front sump pan off my old '68 Mustang 289 currently on the 5.0L engine. I placed the 5.0L double sump pan over the CV cross member. Looks like the fabricated engine mounts would have to be fairly tall for the double sump pan to have sufficient clearance above the crossmember and the rack and pinion unit. It also looks like the placement of the front sump drain plug would be right over the cross member. This MAY make it difficult to get to the plug but, it definitely looks like it would drain all over the crossmember when changing the oil.
I suspect a front sump pan would also require fairly tall mounts for the pan to clear the crossmember and the R&P unit.
I don't know this to be a definite or if it would work better (this is speculation) but, a rear sump pan MIGHT be better at clearing everything, allow you to sit the engine lower on the crossmember mounts and might place the drain plug out away from the crossmember where it's easier to get to with a lot less potential mess involved come oil change time(?).
Here's an example of a rear sump pan for a 302/5.0L engine.

Do you think those eng. mounts are too high?

From what I can remember, that looks like a Steve Wilkes (Mustang Steve) picture.Ozblitz wrote:This is pic. Of rear sump on CV front end on a 66 F100. This eng. was sold and a 5.0 w/ dual sump also fit this same truck. However, I believe you are right about the oil change mess.

Sometimes it's hard to perceive the actual depth from a picture because it's in 2D but, it LOOKS like the engine mounts could possibly have been a little shorter than what they appear to be in the photo.

Yeah, that' was Steve's truck. I bought it 2 yrears ago, without the 3 duce eng. set up, so we put a 5.0 w/ dual sump. I dont have the truck nearby so I hadto wait to get to it on the weekend. Its still in the shop being worked on.
