Tire Size vs Wheel Alignment ???

Post by wildcard »

Sitting around doing nothing today. So I took my truck to get the alignment checked after having new tires put on.
Went to Wal-Mart and had 215/65/R15's put on the front. I have 235/65/R15's on the back.
Took it down the road to Discount Tire to have the alignment checked. They say everything is good and solid under the front. BUT, they can't check the alignment because the tires all have to be the same size. :? I told them that apparently this was not a problem a year ago when they charged me for an alignment with the same sized tires as is on it now. Their response was that the person that done the last one was no longer there.
Has anyone ever heard of this? If so, please explain what difference the rear tire size has to do with the front alignment.

Maybe on a newer vehicle with independent suspension .
But on our old trucks you only can align the front.

maybe their new high tech machine needs to "see" all four wheels ,
but I would think the alignment should be done with the tires that are going down the road.

Are there any old tire / frame shops in your area?

The only thing they can do is the Toe adjustment (front) unless you find specialty place that can bend axles!!!!

390bump, that's what the shop that closed used to do. He only had 1 bay so you had to get an appointment and that was usually about a month in advance. Then hope he was still in good health and not the hospital. He told me once that he couldn't retire because he was the only one that had the knowledge and tools for a hundred miles around. I guess he was right. May he Rest In Peace now.

It's BS as the alignment fixture clamps onto the wheel rim, not the tire and the optic offset is enough to clear just about any tire wall.

Sounded like BS to me too. Guess they wanted to sell me some tires I don't want or need. :hmm:
