Given that I'm not an electrical engineer, and my desire for features is more than AM/FM, I'm considering one of these: http://www.retrosound.com/ for my truck. All of the modern capabilities, and all of the original stylings.

I'm not super excited about cutting a couple of holes in my doors, but if you still have the gas tank, speaker locations are pretty damn sparse. I've got the stereo center speaker from LMC and it works pretty decently with my cheapo tape deck, but I will need more/better speakers if I'm going to spend $300 on a stereo for the dash.

Those are my thoughts on the matter.

There's a forum for philco radio's on the net. I had the forum on my old computer before it crashed. Looked like it had good information on it.

The format of AM/FM radio is pretty much the same as it ever was, and any old radio will work just fine.
I too didn't want to cut holes in the doors, and I rigged speakers in boxes under my seats. They basically
are pointing at my feet and the firewall, but better than holes in the doors.
