No, my wife did not have another baby.
Something much less expensive. We are now the proud parents of a 1997 Ford Taurus!
This little bundle of joy cost us the exorbitant, overpriced sum of................. $10. Yes, that's ten. Dollar sign one zero. It belonged to a friend of my wife's, who has had it for 14 years and wanted something higher off the ground that wouldn't hurt her knees to get into. This car does sit rather low to the ground. She said she could probably get $500 for it, but would rather sell it cheap to someone who would use it and take care of it. This will be for my wife to drive.
It does have some issues: the fuel gauge doesn't work, most likely the sending unit. I'll check that out. She said that 3 times in the last 8 months, during warmer weather, it will occasionally not want to start. But if it sits awhile it'll start right up. Wondering if these two are related to the fuel pump/sending unit module.
The transmission will occasionally surge a few feet.
The upper intake manifold needs a new gasket.
The key doesn't work in the trunk, but the electric release functions fine.
The heater/AC switch functions only in defrost mode. Should be less than $50 to fix that.
It's really in pretty good shape for an 18 year old car.
And from the front: (Notice the headlights. There was a distinct light yellow haze to those lenses that doesn't come through too well in the pic.)
After some Crest tooth polishing toothpaste and a bunch of elbow grease:
He's smiling. I think he likes it here!
Not too bad a purchase for $10.

Re: A new addition to our family!
Nice buy!
The trans problems are legendary in the Taurus's of that era, along with the 3.8 engine being as well sealed as a screen door. Get a few years out of her and enjoy it while you can.
(We had a '94 that belonged to my late mom, and then my late brother, who all but destroyed it.)
Things to watch out for other than the aforementioned: 1) Any coolant leak is obviously bad, and a sign of possibly bad things to come. I used a product called 'Blue Devil' which worked wonders after replacing the water pump one weekend, and then finding the timing cover (behind the water pump, naturally) began leaking. 2) Watch the plastic tanks on both sides of the radiator--they split right down the middle, right on the reinforcing ribs. 3) Spark plugs: A complete, colossal pain in the butt to change. Those on the back side of the engine are well-nigh impossible to change--have to be done from underneath in our case. Do your self a favor: allocate a bunch of time, change the plugs and wires and coil packs all at the same time and the performance will increase dramatically. 4) In a no-start condition, you might find that you have a short in the ECU, which on the 94 was located on the radiator wall under the plastic shroud. This took me about three hours to find, which was about five minutes before I went and got my .45 and drilled the engine with a full magazine. Pull the ECU, spray some WD 40 on the contacts and slather them with silicone dielectric grease, and you're done.
The rest of the vehicle is pretty easy to to work on, if you have lots of metric tools.

Re: A new addition to our family!
Just re-read your post. Check out that ECU location and see if there is anything that could be corrosion or water in the ECU harness.
The '97 is located inside the cabin, I think behind the glovebox.

Disconnect your battery, let the ECM/PCM discharge for a few minutes, pull it and check the contacts.

Good find.
My late wife and I had a 02 Taurus Sport. Drove it for 8 years, gave it to a daughter and she is still driving it.
It has not had anything but a couple minor repairs and is a fun car to drive.

Great buy for the money, no doubt.
One thing to watch for is the plastic expansion tank. If it has a reddish-brown or rust colored tint to it, you've already got a head gasket leaking.. or worse.
Hopefully it lasts many years with no problems.
And just to clarify. The Tauruses came with the 3.0 engine.

Yes for 97. Through the years the Taurus has had several different motors.Twisted_Steel wrote:Great buy for the money, no doubt.

Re: A new addition to our family!
Thanks for the info, everyone! My son (15-1/2) already has his eye on it. We'll see who winds up driving what.
